Welcome to Track and Field

 

Since 1972, Cascade Striders has welcomed athletes with all athletic abilities and talents.

While we do not require a try-out, we DO require ALL of our athletes to come to practices and meets prepared to be challenged, have fun, work hard, and be respectful of coaches, parents, and teammates.

Due to COVID-related limitations (see below), only returning Strider families and athletes 10 and older will be eligible to register. The official season will last until Saturday, July 24th.
- This season will consist of Strider-only meets. While you are free to compete in meets involving other teams, the Cascade Striders will not be handling registration for those.
- Access to tracks will be VERY difficult until the high schools finish their highly compressed sports schedules this year. So while we have some access to track facilities, we will often be working out in a number of unique locations until the high schools finish out. This may also require the distance group to be in a different locaation than the sprinters, if we are particularly limited in locations.
- Not all field events will be offered in their same capacities as previous years, though most will be supported. Feel free to reach out to Coach Cameron if you have a specific question on which events will or will not be offered.
- As an additional reminder on COVID limitations, parents/guardians/spectators will NOT be allowed at any practices or meets.

Sprint Program

The Sprints Program has two workout groups;
Short Sprints (100m-400m) and Long Sprints (400m-800m)

  • Athletes are placed into running groups based on ability, not age or gender
  • Athletes in the 5-6 age group practice for 1 hour only. Parents MUST stay at practice AND within earshot the entire time for this age group.
  • Parents MUST stay at practice for athletes ages 9 and under

 

Workout Flow

  • Team Huddle for team announcements
  • 2 Warm-up laps (1 lap jog, 1 lap alternate skipping 100m, jogging 100m)
  • Dynamic Warm-up Drills (Lead by a coach)
  • Plyometric, Flexibility, and Form drills (Lead by a coach)
  • Running Workout (Sprint Coach will announce workout and break athletes into running groups)
  • 1 lap cool down jog
  • Core (As a team, lead by Strength coach)
  • Stretch (As a team, lead by Coach OR coach assigned athlete)
  • Final huddle for reminders/announcements
  • Dismiss

Distance Program

The Distance Program is headed by Coach Joe Johnson and will share a similar workout flow as the Sprint program with an emphasis on developing and training for the middle and long distance events.

USATF Youth Age Groups and Events

The age groups are set by USATF, not the team

 

Please Note:

  • ALL EVENTS LISTED MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE AT ALL TRACK MEETS.
  • CASCADE STRIDERS COACHES DO NOT HAVE CONTROL OVER EVENTS OFFERED AT MEETS NOT HOSTED BY OUR TEAM.
  • Athletes ARE NOT allowed to “move up” or “move down” to compete in an age division as stipulated by USATF RULES.
  • Relays are a privilege, not a right. The Head Coach has final decision making authority regarding relay team participants and relay team orders.

Age Division: 5-6 (born 2014 and 2015) (Mighty Mights)

  • Registration/Competition event limit: 3 events
  • Running Events: 50m, 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay
  • Field Event: Long Jump (LJ)

 

Age Division: 7-8 (born 2012 and 2013)

  • Registration/Competition event limit: 3 events
  • Running Events: 100m,200m,400m,800m,1500m, 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay
  • Field Events: LJ, Mini Javelin (300g), Shot Put (2k)

 

Age Division: 9-10 (born 2010 and 2011)

  • Registration/Competition event limit: 3 events
  • Running Events: 100m,200m,400m,800m,1500m, 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay
  • Field Events: High Jump (HJ), LJ, Mini Javelin (300g), Shot Put (2k)
    *Combined/Multi Event: TRIATHLON: (Event Completed in 1 day)
  • GIRLS:High Jump-Shot Put-200m/ BOYS:High Jump-Shot Put-400m

Age Division: 11-12 (born 2008 and 2009)

  • Registration/Competition event limit: 3 events
  • Running Events: 80m hurdles, 100m,200m,400m,800m,1500m, 1500m Racewalk, 3000m (3km), 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay, 4x800m relay
  • Field Events: HJ, LJ, Mini Javelin (300g), Shot Put (6lbs), Discus (1k)

  • GIRLS: 80m hurdles, SP, HJ, LJ, 800m
  • BOYS: 80m hurdles, SP, HJ, LJ, 1500m
